Schunk Group acquires SemiMat GmbH

The Schunk Group has acquired SemiMat GmbH. SemiMat, based in Büdingen near Frankfurt, specializes in the production and sale of quartz parts for the semiconductor equipment market. Semiconductor quartz parts, and especially quartz parts for silicon epitaxy processes, is an integral part of Schunk’s Microelectronics portfolio, currently produced by Schunk Xycarb Technology in Georgetown (USA) and Hsinchu, Taiwan. Among other things, such quartz parts play a critical role in machines for manufacturing computer chips. SemiMat has 19 employees in Büdingen, and 9 employees in Freiberg.
"SemiMat is a very good fit for the Schunk Group. With this purchase, we are significantly expanding the market position of our Business Unit Microelectronics in the field of quartz parts production," says Dr. Arno Roth, CEO of the Schunk Group.
Unique production footprint for epitaxy quartz
"With this acquisition, we are the only epitaxy quartz parts supplier in the semiconductor industry with production sites in the USA, Europe and Asia. It will allow us to support global semiconductor customers in their growth by offering one global quartz application platform combined with local support," Peter Spit, President of Schunk Xycarb Technology and Head of Business Unit Microelectronics, is pleased to report. "Combined with the machining capabilities of the SemiMat site in Freiberg this will allow us to expand our portfolio in new products."
"I am very pleased that SemiMat will become a part of the Schunk Group. Schunk Xycarb Technology is a worldwide leading company in both quartz and graphite coated parts for the semiconductor market", says Ralf Reusswig, former owner and managing director of SemiMat. "This enables SemiMat’s further growth due to the excellent financial position of the Schunk Group. Together with Schunk Xycarb Technology we can grow with the expansion of the semiconductor industry in Europe."
